GAHAR Explores Cooperation Opportunities with Leading International Healthcare Accreditation Organizations

Dr. Ahmed Taha, Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation (GAHAR), held a series of productive meetings with several leading international healthcare accreditation organizations, including the Joint Commission International (JCI), the Turkish Healthcare Quality and Accreditation Institute (TUSKA), and the Brazilian National Accreditation Organization (ONA). These meetings aim to strengthen frameworks for cooperation and establish strategic international partnerships to elevate quality and safety standards in the healthcare sector.

Dr. Taha highlighted that fostering collaboration between regional and international healthcare institutions is a fundamental step toward ensuring patient safety. He emphasized GAHAR's dedication to opening new channels for international cooperation to create a significant leap in medical tourism and healthcare service quality in Egypt and transfer Egypt’s healthcare accreditation expertise to Africa.

This came during his reception of the JCI team, Dr Murat Kucukkaya, Managing Director of Middle East and Africa, and Dr. Muna Sa’id, Regional Manager of Middle East and Africa at GAHAR’s Certified Training Center to explore ways of exchanging expertise in healthcare accreditation and enhancing internal systems to improve patient safety.

GAHAR Chairman also underscored the importance of scientific research in supporting evidence-based decisions, proposing joint research initiatives to strengthen international standards. He outlined GAHAR’s vision and mission, highlighting its achievements and pivotal role in improving Egypt’s healthcare system by accrediting healthcare facilities in line with quality standards. Additionally, he emphasized GAHAR’s support for healthcare facilities to ensure proper implementation of national quality standards and sustain their application.

Dr. Murad Kokukkaya, JCI’s Managing Director of Middle East and Africa, reaffirmed the importance of enhancing cooperation between JCI and GAHAR through experience exchange and joint training programs.

Dr. Taha accompanied the JCI team on a tour of the Training Center, observing a training program designed for surveyors to familiarize them with updates to the 2025 edition of hospital accreditation standards. Dr. Murat commended the efforts invested in the program and the outstanding performance of the Training Center team and GAHAR’s surveyors.

During meetings with counterparts in Turkey and Brazil, discussions explored opportunities for practical experience exchange to enhance the sustainability of healthcare quality systems. These discussions also included the role of Centers of Excellence and scientific research in fostering innovation and improving healthcare services, as well as Turkey’s experience in addressing challenges related to accrediting older healthcare facilities.

Dr. Taha stressed that partnerships with international accreditation organizations are a strategic tool for positioning Egypt as a regional hub for medical tourism, attracting patients worldwide to benefit from the high-quality services offered by accredited facilities. He noted that accreditation plays a crucial role in achieving this goal by elevating healthcare services and ensuring alignment with the highest international standards.

He further emphasized the significant opportunity to introduce quality and accreditation standards across African countries, enhancing regional integration and healthcare efficiency while promoting sustainability and innovation in the healthcare sector.

Dr. Figen Senel, President of TUSKA, presented an overview of the institute’s role in developing accreditation standards and ensuring healthcare safety in Turkey. She highlighted TUSKA’s involvement in safety management, protocol development, and training healthcare professionals on quality implementation, as well as its role as a member of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua).

Additionally, Ms. Gilvan Lolato, from ONA, showcased ONA’s advanced operational framework for accreditation systems, emphasizing the organization’s expertise in telemedicine regulatory frameworks. She explained ONA’s three-level healthcare facility accreditation system and a single-level service accreditation model, supported by a team of 800 surveyors, including 400 field professionals delivering outstanding performance.

The meetings resulted in setting frameworks to enhance collaboration through Centers of Excellence and scientific research, reaffirming the commitment of healthcare accreditation bodies to improving quality standards and patient safety within regional and international healthcare systems.
